D-STAR programming — what to put in RPT1 / RPT2 / UR

D-STAR uses three fields to route audio. Wrong values mean nobody hears you. Here are the exact strings to program for each repeater, plus the path into the XLX159 reflector.

D-STAR is a shared resource. Most "is the repeater broken" reports are actually "somebody left a reflector linked for three days." Don't be that person.

Do link when…

  • You want to talk to a specific reflector or repeater outside local RF range — set URCall to the reflector (e.g. XLX159 B) and RPT2 to the same string. Your audio crosses through XLX159 into the bridged modes.
  • You're calling a specific station on a different reflector — set URCall to that station's callsign, RPT2 to the reflector you're calling through.
  • You hear a station say "listening on REF030 C" and you want to join them — set URCall to CQCQCQ only AFTER you've dialed in RPT2 = REF030 C and your radio is actually linked there.
  • You're at a hotspot on a different module from the calling station — use the gateway (regist.dstargateway.org) to register so your callsign routes correctly across the trust network.

Don't link when…

  • You're just having a local QSO on RF — leave URCall = CQCQCQ and RPT2 set to your local repeater. Tying up a reflector module for a 2-minute local chat means everyone on that module is hearing you when they didn't ask to.
  • You don't know what the last person left RPT2 set to — if you key up with their RPT2 still in your radio, YOU are the one re-linking the repeater into wherever it was. Check before you transmit.
  • You're doing a net or scheduled event on a different module — coordinate with net control first, and have the net control explicitly un-link at the end. A 2-hour net left linked for 3 days is the #1 cause of "is KK7DFL broken?" reports.
  • You're testing your radio and not sure what your settings are doing — use a simplex frequency or a local test reflector, not a busy hub. If you must test on KK7DFL/KK7DFM, identify clearly and keep it to < 10 seconds.
